# Fans on social media blast ‘awful’ Jonjo Shelvey for ‘terrible’ performance

[Newcastle United drew 1-1 with Watford](https://www.nufc.co.uk/matches/first-team/2021-22/newcastle-united-v-watford/) on Saturday after conceding a late equaliser and Jonjo Shelvey was one of many players to underperform, scoring a player rating of 5/10 by [Chronicle Live](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/newcastle-united-player-ratings-watford-22765262).

The 29-year-old saw a lot of the ball and occasionally distributed well in possession, but he was the only Newcastle midfielder not to make a tackle or create a chance over the 90 minutes.

Shelvey has been a regular under Eddie Howe without his performances justifying the continued selection, so fans on [social media](https://twitter.com/search?q=shelvey%20%23nufc&src=recent_search_click&f=live) believe it’s time he was replaced.

> Shelvey didn't make one tackle yesterday. For a CM that is a terrible stat. He isn't anywhere near good enough for the PL. He'd struggle in Championship.

> I’d take anyone to replace Shelvey/Longstaff; our CM have almost been overlooked due to our awful centre backs when they are as much part of the problem

> We need midfielders as well mate, both Shelvey and Longstaff were poor abd outplayed by a very average Watford team

> Not good enough: Lascelles,Krafth,Longstaff,Almiron, Shelvey,Clark. That is 6 players needed to be replaced ASAP. Oh and we need another striker [#NUFC](https://twitter.com/hashtag/NUFC?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)

> We are mugs if we finish this window with shelvey and longstaff playing CM whilst we could have got Eriksen for free [#NUFC](https://twitter.com/hashtag/NUFC?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)

[Against Watford](https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1549754/LiveStatistics/England-Premier-League-2021-2022-Newcastle-United-Watford), the England international had 59 touches, failed to win an aerial duel, completed 78.9% of his 52 passes, failed to create a chance, had two shots without hitting the target, found a teammate with eight of his 17 long-range passes, failed to make a tackle, had two interceptions, made one clearance, gave away two fouls, picked up a booking and had one successful dribble.

Shelvey has made [13 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jonjo-shelvey/leistungsdaten/spieler/71292) in all competitions this season, scoring one goal. Howe isn’t blessed with a lot of [depth](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/newcastle-united/ausfallzeiten/verein/762) in midfield as Jeff Hendrick is surplus to requirements, Isaac Hayden is injured and Joe Willock is still building up his fitness. Fans hope a midfielder is signed before the January transfer window shuts.
