Kevin Campbell says Newcastle signing ‘brilliant’ Solanke would be ‘great move’

Newcastle United confirmed the signing of Chris Wood on Thursday and are expected to bring in another striker before the January transfer window shuts – the Magpies have been linked with a move for Dominic Solanke.

Eddie Howe has inherited a side that are 15th in the Premier League for shots per game (11.2) and 17th for goals (19) while being without top goalscorer Callum Wilson for up to two months, so he needs to strengthen up front.

Kevin Campbell believes the ‘brilliant’ Solanke would be a ‘great move’ by Newcastle and thinks Howe’s relationship with him might be the clincher. He told Football Insider: “He’s become a better player because he’s starting regularly.

“He was one of these Chelsea wonderkids coming through. He then went to Liverpool and it didn’t quite work out. He’s doing really brilliantly at Bournemouth right now and they’re flying in the Championship.”

The Cherries are top of the Championship and Solanke is the division’s third-top scorer with 18 goals and two assists from 25 games. He’s netted a total of 38 goals with 15 assists in 117 games for Bournemouth and is finally realising his potential after wasted years at Chelsea and Liverpool.

“Eddie Howe has worked with him before, and he obviously knows him really well. That could be a great move. One thing Solanke can do is finish.” The 24-year-old was signed by Howe at Bournemouth in 2019 and played 46 times under him, scoring just four goals.

Newcastle could do a lot worse than the prolific Englishman, but he likely won’t come cheap as he’s firing Bournemouth back to the Premier League.
