Fans on social media react as Newcastle lodge £28m bid for Diego Carlos

Newcastle United are 19th in the Premier League for points (11), 20th for goal conceded (42), 18th for most shots conceded per game (15.7) and 19th for clean sheets (1), so it’s clear they need to bolster their defence.

The Magpies aren’t short of centre-backs with Ciaran Clark, Federico Fernandez, Jamaal Lascelles and Fabian Schar at their disposal, but the aforementioned quartet clearly haven’t been good enough in 2021/22 which is why Newcastle are looking at Diego Carlos.

The 28-year-old defender has made 27 appearances in all competitions for Sevilla this season, playing every minute of their Champions League campaign. He’s one of the first names on the teamsheet under Julen Lopetegui and has a £35m asking price, so fans on social media are annoyed that Newcastle are low-balling Sevilla with a £28m bid.

Carlos joined Sevilla on a five-year deal from FC Nantes and has gone on to make 118 appearances across the board, scoring five goals with one assist. Newcastle will have to lodge an improved bid for Sevilla to sanction the departure of such an important player, so it’s no wonder fans are annoyed at their latest offer.

In other news, Trevor Sinclair says Newcastle signing Chris Wood for £25m is “a snip”

matchday.
