Newcastle United are 17th in the Premier League for goals (19) and will be without their top scorer for nearly two months due to injury. Callum Wilson has been ruled out until March, so the Magpies are going to sign a replacement striker before the January transfer window shuts.
Luke Edwards of the Telegraph says Newcastle are interested in Chris Wood and hope to bring him to St James’ Park this month. The 30-year-old plays for relegation rivals Burnley, however, so there could be some resistance from the Clarets. Despite this, fans on social media are open to the move.
Wood joined Burnley from Leeds United in 2017 and has gone on to make 165 appearances in all competitions, scoring 53 goals with nine assists. The New Zealand international, who boasts 27 goals in 59 caps, has only bagged three goals in 17 Premier League games for Burnley this season, but his skillset might be useful to Newcastle.
In Saturday’s FA Cup defeat to Cambridge United, the Magpies whipped in 12 corners and dozens of crosses without scoring. Wood is a 6ft 3in striker who’s used his head with 40% of his shots in the league this season, so he might the ideal player getting on the end of Newcastle’s balls into the box.
