Newcastle United were knocked out of the FA Cup at home to Cambridge United on Saturday afternoon and a number of players were criticised for their below-par performances. Jonjo Shelvey was one of them and fans on social media made their feelings clear about his contribution.

The 29-year-old wasn’t the worst player at St James’ Park, but he’s been inconsistent like many others this season and might be on his way out when his contract expires next year. Shelvey’s deal is up in 18 months and it’s hard to see him staying beyond 2023. Supporters don’t believe he’s good enough to keep either, so the writing may be on the wall.

Shelvey has made 12 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring one goal. The England international is composed in possession and has good distribution, but he’s not adept at turning over the ball which is hurting Newcastle.

Chronicle Live gave Shelvey a player rating of 5/10 for his performance against Cambridge and claimed he lost the midfield battle, which is an accurate criticism of his flaws. The 29-year-old has been dribbled past nine times in 11 league games and is only successful with 53% of his tackles.

Shelvey has given away 11 fouls too, so it’s clear he isn’t cutting it with the Magpies.
