Newcastle United are two places and two points from safety after 19 Premier League games while being 17th in the table for goals, so a prolific striker could be the difference between relegation and them surviving.
Callum Wilson is the Magpies top scorer this season, but six goals in 14 games isn’t overly impressive and he’s currently sidelined with an injury. This opens the door to Newcastle signing a striker before the winter transfer window shuts, say 90min.
And given Eddie Howe needs a tried and tested option, preferably with experience in England, it makes sense for Newcastle to be sniffing around Edin Dzeko – a Premier League winner who has a career total of 303 goals from 661 games. Fans on social media are open to the move too.
Sean Vickers: “Dzeko is a winner with a winning mentality. Signing him will bring up the standards and mentality in the squad.
Dan Scott: “Be a great loan signing to help keep us up, then maybe look at a younger striker with great potential.”
Jack Clark: “How would people be upset with this? He is class and would score goals.”
Adam Hill: “Fantastic player for the short term. But Inter won’t let him leave mid-season. Would take him in a heartbeat!”
Stephen Anthony Gregory: “This would be an awesome signing. What a player.”
Dzeko joined Inter Milan on a two-year-deal from AS Roma over the summer and has gone on to make 24 appearances in all competitions, scoring 11 goals with five assists. The 35-year-old, who boasts 60 goals in 118 games for Bosnia-Herzegovina, won two titles in his five years at Manchester City, so he’s a player of some predigree.
And although Newcastle are one of the richest clubs in Europe, it remains to be seen whether Dzeko would leave Inter midway through the season. Inter are Serie A defending champions and currently lead the table after 19 games, so is he turning down the chance of silverware?
