Fans on social media react as Newcastle are linked with Anthony Martial

Newcastle United are 19th in the Premier League for points (11), 15th for shots per game (11.2) on average and 17th for goals (19), so it’s a fair assessment to suggest getting in a goalscorer could see them climb out of the relegation zone.

And although the Magpies have Callum Wilson, Dwight Gayle and Joelinton at their disposal, Wilson is out with a calf injury, Gayle has been deemed surplus to requirements and Joelinton is now impressing in midfield. Craig Hope of the Daily Mail says Anthony Martial is on their radar. Fans on social media aren’t too thrilled at the news, however.

David Amber: “We’ve been here before – a fringe player in a struggling Man Utd squad.”

Robert Balmer: “(I’d) rather bring back Shola Ameobi. Not one ounce of fight in Martial, especially in a relegation battle.”

Kev Proud: “If he can’t get into (Man Utd’s) side, why should he be good enough for us?”

Marius Valaker Frøyen: “Massively overrated player… No thanks.”

Dennis Dietlein: “We don’t want that type of a player. We should get a proper striker.”

The 26-year-old joined Manchester United from AS Monaco in 2015 and has gone on to make 268 appearances in all competitions, scoring 79 goals with 50 assists. Martial hasn’t been at his best for 18 months, however, so his future at Old Trafford is up in the air.

The French international scored four goals in 23 Premier League games last season and has only one goal in seven this campaign. Martial’s representative Philippe Lamboley believes his client wants out of United, but it remains to be seen if Newcastle stand a chance of signing him.
