Newcastle United confirmed the signing of Kieran Trippier on a two-and-a-half-year deal from Atletico Madrid on Friday and immediately accusations were levelled at the 31-year-old, suggesting he’s only made the move to earn himself more money.
Trippier wanted to put the rumours to bed by addressing them directly. He gave an interview to NUFC TV and then posted a tweet to express his excitement to be a Magpie. He thanked the supporters for the warm welcome and fans on social media returned in kind.
Trippier is the first signing made by Newcastle in January and isn’t expected to be the last. The Magpies are one of the richest clubs in Europe following their takeover by Public Investment Fund, PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media, so they’re expected to attract a lot more talent to St James’ Park.
Trippier spent two-and-a-half seasons at Atleti, making 86 appearances in all competitions. The England international has made 185 appearances for Burnley and 114 appearances for Tottenham Hotspur too, so he’ll feel at home back in the Premier League.
Newcastle face Cambridge United in the FA Cup third round on Saturday afternoon and there’s a chance Trippier could feature.
