Only five Premier League clubs have scored fewer goals than Newcastle United this season and only five Premier League sides have been shut out more times, so it’s clear the Magpies desperately need to bolster their attack.
The winter transfer window opens in just over a week and Newcastle are expected to sign a striker, but Alan Hutton is setting his sights high on the Toon Army’s behalf by recommending Edin Dzeko.
He told Football Insider: “If you can keep the likes of Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin fit, Newcastle are well-stocked in that department. Of course, they’ll want to add some goals, and Dzeko is a player who has done well in Italy since moving there from the Premier League.
“Coming into a team who will create chances means that he will score guaranteed goals for Newcastle. But you just question whether he can make that step up again at 35.
“That being said, they need to be looking at the other end and thinking about how they can stop the ball going into their net. If they can go out and get two top-quality centre-backs, then they can stop the rot.
“If they can get Dzeko for a decent package, wages and fee, then I still believe he has a lot to give for them.” The 35-year-old joined Inter Milan from AS Roma in August and has gone on to make 23 appearances in all competitions, scoring 11 goals with four assists.
Inter are four points clear atop of Serie A and only Lautaro Martinez has more goals in the squad than Dzeko, so it’s hard to see why they’d sell him mid-season. It’s easy to see why Newcastle would want him, given Dzeko boasts two Premier League titles from his time at Manchester City and has a career total of 303 goals from 660 games, but their pursuit may not be successful.
Newcastle are one of the richest clubs in Europe following their takeover by Public Investment Fund, PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media, but they might have to turn their attentions elsewhere as Inter wouldn’t risk their title hopes by letting an important leave before the season has concluded.
