Fans on social media say ‘greedy’ Saint-Maximin ‘should pass’ more to teammates

Allan Saint-Maximin is a hero among Newcastle United supporters for his goals, creativity and dribbling abilities, but he’s not without his faults. The 24-year-old recognises he’s an important player in the squad who’s relied upon in the final third, but he often doesn’t trust his teammates enough.

In Newcastle’s 3-1 defeat to Liverpool on Thursday evening, Saint-Maximin displayed the good and the bad. He took pressure off his defence by carrying the ball from deep and created an opportunity for himself and a teammate, but he also relinquished possession without working hard to get it back.

Supporters on social media know what to expect from the French wide-man, but they were frustrated with his inconsistency at Anfield.

Against Liverpool, Saint-Maximin played for 78 minutes, had 25 touches, completed 66.7% of his 12 passes, created one chance, had one shot which hit the target, whipped in one cross which found a teammate, made one tackle, had one interception, won one freekick and made three successful dribbles.

The 24-year-old has made 18 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring three goals with three assists. He picked up an injury against Liverpool which is why he was hooked in the second half, so time will tell if he recovers to face Manchester City on Sunday.
