Fans on social media criticise ‘bad’ Jonjo Shelvey for ‘poor’ performance

Newcastle United were thrashed 4-0 by Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Sunday afternoon and Jonjo Shelvey was heavily criticised by supporters on social media for his performance.

The 29-year-old has been in decent form since Eddie Howe took over the Magpies but was given a player rating of 4/10 by Chronicle Live and can’t afford a repeat in Newcastle’s next game.

Against Leicester, Shelvey played for 84 minutes, had 75 touches, won one aerial duel, completed 79% of his 62 passes, had one shot, failed to create a chance, whipped in five crosses with 40% accuracy, made four tackles, gave away two fouls and made one clearance.

The England international has made nine Premier League appearances this season, amassing 636 minutes of playing time. He missed two months of football earlier in the campaign but has been a regular since his return to fitness in November.

Shelvey did underperform against Leicester, but he shouldn’t have to worry about losing his place ahead of Thursday’s trip to face Liverpool. The 29-year-old will hope to put Sunday’s game behind him for the sake of the club as Newcastle are still in the relegation zone as the mid-point approaches.
