# Fans on social media react as Newcastle are linked with Stefan de Vrij

Although Newcastle United aren’t short of defenders [with](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/newcastle-united/ausfallzeiten/verein/762) Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar, Federico Fernandez and Ciaran Clark at their disposal, it does appear they could bring in another centre-back when the winter transfer window opens. Supporters on [social media](https://twitter.com/search?q=newcastle%20de%20Vrij%20&src=recent_search_click&f=live) seem tired of the rumours, however.

The Magpies have recently been [linked](https://readnewcastle.com/2021/11/17/fans-on-social-media-stay-quiet-as-newcastle-are-linked-with-abdou-diallo/) with Paris Saint-Germain’s Abdou Diallo, but Martin Hardy of [The Times](https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/newcastle-plot-serie-a-raid-for-inters-stefan-de-vrij-and-marcelo-brozovic-and-lazios-thomas-strakosha-9tvvmtpbr?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1637168999) says they’re also after Inter Milan’s Stefan de Vrij. The 29-year-old is a regular for the Nerazzurri but might be sold as Inter are in a lot of [debt](https://football-italia.net/report-inter-must-find-e340m-in-36-months/).

> Newcastle probably don’t even know who they want yet. Howe will still be assessing the squad and they are unlikely to do anything till they get a DOF.

> I've never taken one transfer rumour seriously yet. We seem to just be linked with everyone.

De Vrij [joined](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/stefan-de-vrij/transfers/spieler/111196) Inter on a free transfer from Lazio in 2018 and has gone on to make [139 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/stefan-de-vrij/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/111196) in all competitions, scoring eight goals with six assists. The Netherlands international has played in 15 of [16 games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/stefan-de-vrij/leistungsdaten/spieler/111196) this season and has two years left on his deal at the San Siro, but Inter’s finances may dictate his future.

The Serie A giants were in €700m (£587.6m) worth of debt in August, so Newcastle’s new lucrative resources might help them out. Whether De Vrij would leave the defending champions to join relegation-threatened Newcastle remains to be seen, however.
