# Fans on social media aren’t thrilled as Newcastle eye Howe to be their new manager

Newcastle sacked Steve Bruce two weeks ago but have yet to locate his replacement. Their [takeover](https://www.nufc.co.uk/news/latest-news/pif-pcp-capital-partners-and-rb-sports-media-acquire-newcastle-united-football-club/) by Public Investment Fund (PIF), PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media means they’ll have [significant funds](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11678/12428222/newcastle-takeover-how-and-why-newcastle-are-on-the-verge-of-becoming-one-of-the-worlds-richest-football-clubs) to spend in January, so some big names were linked with the vacancy.

Newcastle [narrowed their shortlist](https://theathletic.com/news/unai-emery-leading-contender-for-newcastle-job-eddie-howe-alternative-option/umMKQ0B7Vy12/) to Villarreal manager Unai Emery and former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe, but Emery has since rejected their approach and committed his future to Villarreal. Howe is now their No.1 target, but fans on social media aren’t too enthusiastic about it.

> Imagine having a choice of emery or howe and choosing howe!\

> What the hell happened to Favre/Fonseca that Howe is preferred over them? Are they planning for the Championship already?

> If it ends up Eddie howe after 3 weeks of searching then you may have to question some things, I would be happy with him but surely if its howe it could have been done a lot sooner.

> Eddie Howe would still be a very good appointment for Newcastle, but they’ve made a real mess of things.

> I really don’t know about Howe as an appointment to keep Newcastle up. He didn’t show ability to organise a defence filled with Championship-level players at Bournemouth. [https://t.co/NTr9VuvAUE](https://t.co/NTr9VuvAUE)

> Newcastle can't afford to wait for any manager at all, they need someone in ASAP.\

> I'm not Eddie Howe's biggest fan but he's an upgrade on what's there and chances are he'd galvanise the squad a bit before spending 34m on Dominic Solanke. [https://t.co/wm5p8Fp3kF](https://t.co/wm5p8Fp3kF)

Howe has [managed](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/eddie-howe/stationen/trainer/10976) Bournemouth (2008 – 2011) (2012 – 2020) and Burnley (2011 – 2012), presiding over 543 matches in all competitions. After winning promotion to the Premier League with Bournemouth in 2015, Howe had five consecutive [seasons](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/eddie-howe/leistungsdatenLigenNational/trainer/10976) in the top-flight.

Fans are unsure whether he’s the right manager because he never surpassed 46 points in any of those five seasons despite [spending](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/eddie-howe/spielertransfers/trainer/10976/plus/0/galerie/0?station_id=62601) £255m on 34 players. Many of Bournemouth’s most expensive acquisitions flopped under his management too, so Howe was criticised for failing to get the best from those players.

The Newcastle hierarchy clearly believe he’s the right option, however, so time will tell whether he ends up replacing Steve Bruce.
