# Fans unhappy on social media as Newcastle eye Roberto Martinez

Newcastle United are on the hunt for a new manager after parting company with Steve Bruce and the [Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-10145303/Newcastle-boss-Graeme-Jones-SCRAPS-days-players-ahead-Chelsea-visit-Saturday.html) say Roberto Martinez is one of many coaches on their shortlist. The 48-year-old has been in charge of the Belgium national team since 2016 and is out of contract in 2022, so his future with the Rode Duivels is uncertain.

Graeme Jones is in caretaker charge while Newcastle hunt for Bruce’s successor and he’d be renewing acquaintances with a friend if Martinez did end up being the next Magpies boss. Jones was [assistant manager](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/graeme-jones/stationen/trainer/7889) of Swansea City (2007 – 2009), Wigan Athletic (2009 – 2013), Everton (2013 – 2016) and Belgium (2016 – 2018) when Martinez was in charge, so the pair know each other well.

The *Daily Mail* say the Spaniard’s compensation would be £2m, so Newcastle wouldn’t have to break the bank to bring him to the North-East. It just remains to be seen if he’s the right option given his [record](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/roberto-martinez/stationen/trainer/4328) in the Premier League – relegated at Wigan and sacked as Everton manager. Fans on [social media](https://twitter.com/CraigHope_DM/status/1454120707521134600) aren’t too enthusiastic about this story and would prefer another option.

> Martinez is the same as Southgate, can’t get some of the best players in the world to win a tournament, absolutely no thanks I hope this rumour disappears quickly

> Why is it been less than £2 million compensation matters? Were not exactly poor anymore.\

> Out of all the names seriously mentioned his the only one I desperately don't want, so it's probably who we will end up with.
