Newcastle United are on the hunt for a new manager after parting company with Steve Bruce and the Daily Mail say Roberto Martinez is one of many coaches on their shortlist. The 48-year-old has been in charge of the Belgium national team since 2016 and is out of contract in 2022, so his future with the Rode Duivels is uncertain.
Graeme Jones is in caretaker charge while Newcastle hunt for Bruce’s successor and he’d be renewing acquaintances with a friend if Martinez did end up being the next Magpies boss. Jones was assistant manager of Swansea City (2007 – 2009), Wigan Athletic (2009 – 2013), Everton (2013 – 2016) and Belgium (2016 – 2018) when Martinez was in charge, so the pair know each other well.
The Daily Mail say the Spaniard’s compensation would be £2m, so Newcastle wouldn’t have to break the bank to bring him to the North-East. It just remains to be seen if he’s the right option given his record in the Premier League – relegated at Wigan and sacked as Everton manager. Fans on social media aren’t too enthusiastic about this story and would prefer another option.
