Fans not enthusiastic on social media as Newcastle are linked with Ousmane Dembele

Newcastle United are expected to spend big in January following their takeover by Public Investment Fund (PIF), PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media, as they’re now the richest club in Europe but at risk of relegation.

The Magpies are 19th in the Premier League with three points from eight games and are yet to win this season, so they could certainly benefit from upgrading the squad to turn things around.

One player Foot Mercato believe is on Newcastle’s radar is Ousmane Dembele. The 24-year-old has an uncertain future at the Camp Nou as his contract is up in 2022 and he’s yet to put pen to paper on an extension.

Dembele joined Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund in 2017 and has gone on to make 118 appearances in all competitions, scoring 30 goals with 21 assists. The French international hasn’t featured for Barca this season, however, as he’s currently out with injury and is still recovering ahead of a late-October return.

The 24-year-old earns €10m-a-year (£8.4m-a-year/£162k-per-week) in Spain so Newcastle would have to make him their highest earner if signed. There’s no guarantee Dembele would be open to leaving Barca for the struggling Magpies either, so time will tell if a deal gets over the line.

Supporters on social media aren’t too enthused about the story as they aren’t convinced about Dembele’s injury record.
