# Fans on social media react to Wayne Rooney showing interest in Newcastle job

Steve Bruce has an uncertain future at Newcastle United following the club’s [takeover](https://www.nufc.co.uk/news/latest-news/pif-pcp-capital-partners-and-rb-sports-media-acquire-newcastle-united-football-club/) by Public Investment Fund (PIF), PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media and many coaches have been named as potential replacements.

[Chronicle Live](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/wayne-rooney-keen-newcastle-united-21897538.amp?__twitter_impression=true) say Wayne Rooney is the latest name in the mix as he’s interested in succeeding Bruce if he’s sacked. The 35-year-old is currently in charge of struggling Derby County, but it remains to be seen how long he’ll stay at the iPro Stadium as they’re in [financial ruin](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11696/12413408/derby-county-enter-administration-amid-ongoing-financial-problems) and at risk of relegation.

Fans on [social media](https://twitter.com/search?q=rooney%20newcastle&src=typed_query&f=live) didn’t seem too excited that Rooney could replace Bruce at St James’ Park, but it’s unlikely the new owners were planning such a switch. Newcastle are now the [richest club](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11678/12428222/newcastle-takeover-how-and-why-newcastle-are-on-the-verge-of-becoming-one-of-the-worlds-richest-football-clubs) in Europe, so it’s expected that the hierarchy will think big if Bruce is moved on.

Rooney has presided over [50 games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/wayne-rooney/stationen/trainer/86680) at Derby as caretaker and permanent manager, winning only 14 times while suffering 21 defeats. The Rams are rock bottom of the Championship with four points from 13 games due to a points deduction from going into administration, so Rooney may not see the season out.

It’s hard to see Newcastle having him on their shortlist though, so the 35-year-old might have set his sights too high.
