# McAvennie says Newcastle have suffered ‘massive blow’ with Wilson injury

Callum Wilson picked up a thigh injury in Newcastle United’s 2-2 draw with Southampton and missed Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to Manchester United. The 29-year-old has since been [ruled out](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/callum-wilson-injury-latest-not-21549459) until October which means he could miss Newcastle’s meeting with Leeds United (September 17) and Watford (September 25).

Frank McAvennie calls his injury a “massive blow” to Newcastle, as the Magpies didn’t bring in another striker over the summer. He told [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/newcastle-set-for-devastating-loss-after-wilson-update-mcavennie/): “It’s not just the goals with Wilson. He holds the ball up so well, he’s a real live wire. It’s a massive blow to lose him for that long.

“Obviously the transfer window has shut and Newcastle didn’t sign a striker. Wilson is so good on the ball, to get another player like him was always going to be hard. He’s so good under pressure, it’s a devastating loss for Newcastle. They are really going to struggle without him.”

Newcastle are currently 19th in the Premier League with one point from a possible 12 – the Toon Army lost 4-2 to West Ham United, lost 2-0 to Aston Villa, drew 2-2 with Southampton and lost 4-1 to Manchester United.

Wilson had scored two goals in [three league appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/callum-wilson/leistungsdaten/spieler/123682) before picking up his injury, so he was enjoying a prolific start to the season. Joelinton is the only other striker available, but he’s without a goal in four league appearances, so he doesn’t have Steve Bruce’s trust.

Allan Saint-Maximin was named in attack over Joelinton against United, so who will get the nod on Friday?
