Woodman has the ability to become a PL starter, claims Shield Gazette reporter Liam Kennedy.
After impressing on his Premier League debut for Newcastle last weekend, fans have rejoiced at the idea of Freddie Woodman becoming a first-team ‘keeper.
The Magpies lost 4-2 to West Ham in their opening game of the season. However, despite conceding four goals, Woodman put in a solid display that saw him save a penalty on his first start.
The England U21 international spent last season on loan with Championship side Swansea City. Woodman started almost every game of the campaign, helping them reach the play-off final before they lost out to a Premier League spot to Brentford.
The 24-year-old also won the golden glove award for keeping the most clean sheets, 20, throughout the season.
Now that he has returned to the North East, fans are excited to see what he can bring to the table if he is given the chance.
On the matter, Newcastle reporter Kennedy said: “I think he’s a good goalkeeper. You’d have to say ‘Is he ready for the Premier League?’, but he can only play to prove that.
“If I was him and I start the season with Newcastle United, I would see it as the perfect opportunity to really cement myself and the shirt will be his to lose from then on in. I think he is a lad with enough ability to really grasp that.”
It looks as though the youngster will retain his spot again this weekend after putting in a solid performance between the sticks, but tough competition from the likes of Karl Darlow and Martin Dubravka means Woodman has to be at the top of his game again this season.
