Longstaff could leave Newcastle as four clubs enter race for signature

Matty Longstaff is coming off the back of a disappointing campaign at Newcastle United, spending most of 2020/21 on the bench, out of the matchday squad or sidelined with injury, so his future at St James’ Park is uncertain.

Steve Bruce preferred Isaac Hayden, Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff, Jonjoe Shelvey and Jeff Hendrick in the engine room last season and Chronicle Live say he’s willing to sell the 21-year-old amid interest from West Bromwich Albion, Middlesbrough, Norwich City and RSC Anderlecht.

Longstaff has made 42 appearances for Newcastle’s U18s, scoring five goals with five assists. He’s made 34 appearances for the U23s, scoring one goal with six assists. And he’s made 20 appearances for the first-team, scoring three goals.

But the central midfielder played only five times across the board last season, amassing a paltry 377 minutes of Premier League football, so the writing appears to be on the wall. There’s a lot of talk on social media about where he could end up, but it’s sad it didn’t work out at Newcastle.

Longstaff had injury woes at the start of the campaign but found himself failing to make the matchday squad most weeks when he was fit, so he’s better off joining a club that will give him opportunities.

In other news, Newcastle told how they could sign Joe Willock and it depends on Aston Villa
