England manager Gareth Southgate confirmed his provisional list of players for the 2020 European Championships and there wasn’t one Newcastle United man included. The Three Lions boss named 33 players rather than the necessary 26 and still a Magpie didn’t make the cut.
Jonjo Shelvey, Andy Carroll and Callum Wilson are the only players in the squad to have made caps for England, but Read Newcastle had to do some digging to find the last appearance-maker that was a Newcastle player at the time of their international outing.
Andros Townsend joined the Toon Army from Tottenham Hotspur in January 2016 and was sold to Crystal Palace on July 2016, but he did represent England in his short-lived stint at Newcastle. He was the 1197th player to turn out for the Three Lions and his appearance came in the form of a cameo in England’s 2-1 friendly win over Australia on May 27.
Townsend featured for England on two more occasions, but he wasn’t a Newcastle player at the time. Here’s hoping Wilson can get himself back in the mix next season.
