On this day (May 21) in 1969, Newcastle United reached the final of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup after beating Glasgow Rangers in the semis, sparking a second pitch invasion.
The Magpies played out a goalless draw in the first leg and enjoyed a 2-0 win in the second leg, courtesy of goals from Jim Scott and Jackie Sinclair in front of more than 59,000 supporters at St James’ Park.

Joe Harvey started Willie McFaul, Ollie Burton, David Craig, Bobby Moncur, Frank Clark, Preben Arentoft, Tommy Gibb, Sinclair, Scott, Wyn Davies and Bryan Robson and wasn’t let down.
Newcastle went on to win the Fairs Cup, beating Újpesti Dózsa over two legs in the final. They won 3-0 at home at St James’ Park on May 29 and won 3-2 at the Megyeri úti Stadium on June 11.
The Magpies beat Feyenoord 4-2 on aggregate in the first round, Sporting 2-1 on aggregate in the second round, Real Zaragoza on away goals (4-4) in the third round, Vitoria de Setubal 6-4 in the quarter-final, Rangers 2-0 in the semi-final and Újpesti Dózsa 6-2 in the final.
