Newcastle lose seven-goal thriller and hand title to Man City on this day in 1968

On this day (May 11) in 1968, Newcastle United lost 4-3 to Manchester City in front of more than 46,000 supporters at St James’ Park and handed them the First Division title in the process.

The Sky Blues were level on points with bitter rivals Manchester United going into the final game of the season, but they ended the campaign two points clear, courtesy of goals from Mike Summerbee, Neil Young and Francis Lee.

From David Potter’s ‘Newcastle United On This Day – History, Facts & Figures from Every Day of the Year’

Joe Harvey started Willie McFaul, David Craig, John McNamee, Bobby Moncur, Frank Clark, Jackie Sinclair, Jim Iley, Jim Scott, Wyn Davies, Bryan Robson and Tommy Robson, but he saw his side going behind early on to a Summerbee goal.

Newcastle responded quickly through Bryan Robson after fine work from Sinclair but fell behind again after half an hour when Young fired a volley past McFaul.

Sinclair levelled the game minutes later with a brilliant volley that matched Young’s effort, but City regained their lead after the restart when Young followed up a blocked shot.

Lee then doubled their advantage by chipping McFaul after being put through on goal and City managed to hold on for the win despite conceding a late consolation goal from John McNamee.
