On this day (May 9) in 1993, Newcastle United thrashed Leicester City and sealed promotion to the Premier League as First Division champions.
The Magpies enjoyed a 7-1 win over the Foxes in front of more than 30,000 supporters at St James’ Park, courtesy of hat tricks from Andy Cole and David Kelly while Rob Lee scored the other goal.

Cole opened the scoring in the fifth minute after pouncing on Kelly’s saved effort. Lee doubled their advantage inside the first quarter after finding the far corner from a narrow angle.
Kelly bagged his first of the game inside the half hour mark with a pinpoint header and bagged his second minutes later with a cool drilled effort inside the box. Cole scored his second in the 40th minute with a low diagonal volley before Kelly completed his hattrick before the break with another header.
Cole completed his own hattrick after the hour mark after being put through on goal to make it 7-0. Steve Walsh pulled a consolation goal back late on, but Newcastle would finish the season top of the First Division with 96 points from 42 games, suffering just one defeat at home.
