# Virals: Sergio Aguero news brings Alan Shearer nostalgia to forefront

Sergio Aguero [confirmed this season will be his last](https://www.mancity.com/news/mens/sergio-aguero-to-leave-manchester-city-63752641) at Manchester City on Monday night and the news has brought a legendary[Newcastle](https://readnewcastle.com/2021/03/04/newcastle-eliott-anderson-fitness-boost/)figure to the forefront of peoples minds.

[Alan Shearer](https://readnewcastle.com/2021/02/10/alan-shearer-praises-isaac-hayden-newcastle-injuries-defence/) – the[Premier League record goalscorer with 260 strikes](https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/players/goals?se=-1)across spells with Blackburn Rovers and of course the Magpies, has been[amongst the discussion](https://twitter.com/talkSPORT/status/1376804105209909248) as football fans debate the greatest strikers to grace the English top flight.

[TalkSPORT](https://twitter.com/talkSPORT/status/1376804105209909248) pundit and [acclaimed member of the famous ‘100 club’](https://www.eurosport.co.uk/football/premier-league/2019-2020/the-100-premier-league-goals-club-the-28-players-jamie-vardy-joins_sto7796146/story.shtml)Darren Bent, named his five greatest frontmen from the Premier League era: ”(Thierry) Henry, (Didier) Drogba, (Ian) Wright, (Wayne) Rooney & (Alan) Shearer.”

Unsurprisingly the topic has got football fans talking as allegiences take hold.

Aguero currently sits on [181 Premier League goals for City from 271 appearances](https://www.premierleague.com/players/4328/Sergio-Ag%C3%BCero/overview), six behind third-place Andy Cole and 27 adrift of Wayne Rooney in second.

Shearer’s magnificent 260 – 148 of which came for the Toon – were [scored in 441 outings across](https://www.premierleague.com/players/89/Alan-Shearer/overview) 14 campaigns.

With [eight games remaining this season](https://www.premierleague.com/tables) it’s safe to say the Newcastle legends record is safe for now.

Should Aguero make a switch away from the league, that would leave just[Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy](https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/players/goals?se=-1) as the only two frontmen still playing with over 100 English top-flight goals.
