Newcastle fans lament Jamal Lewis’ performance against Chelsea

A number of Newcastle United supporters have berated the performance of Jamal Lewis following the Magpies’ 2-0 defeat at Chelsea on Monday night.

The Magpies went into the game hoping to pick up a positive result to maintain their momentum from the win against Southampton and pull further clear of the relegation zone. However, Steve Bruce’s side were far too passive in the first half and found themselves out of the contest by the break as a result, falling to another defeat.

Lewis endured a torrid time of it for most of the night, with the £15m defender switching off on his duties of marking Timo Werner from set pieces on a couple of occasions. One of those lapses was punished with Chelsea’s second goal of the game, while the left-back also struggled in isolation at times due to Newcastle’s tactical setup.

The 23-year-old was not good enough with the ball at his feet, losing possession 15 times (joint-second most of any Newcastle player) and completing just 69% of his passes, while he also failed to win a single aerial duel throughout the match (Sofascore). Those statistics demonstrate how much he struggled to impact the game at both ends of the field on another frustrating night for him.

Newcastle fans slam Lewis’ performance v Chelsea

Many Newcastle fans feel that Lewis, who has one of the lowest WhoScored average match ratings in Bruce’s squad, has simply not been good enough for most of the season – with some believing that he does not have the necessary qualities for a potential relegation battle.
