Callum Wilson suffers ‘deep tear’ to hamstring

Newcastle United have suffered a devastating blow as Steve Bruce confirmed in Thursday’s press conference that Callum Wilson could be out for two months with a hamstring problem.

The 28-year-old picked up the injury in United’s 3-2 win over Southampton and was withdrawn after half an hour.

Bruce explained that Wilson has a ‘deep tear’ in his hamstring which could keep him sidelined for ‘six to eight weeks’. He said: “Unfortunately with Callum it’s a deep tear to his hamstring. That could be six to eight weeks as well.”

The England international has scored 10 goals and supplied five assists in 21 Premier League games this season, so his absence will be felt.

Wilson’s had a hand in four of Newcastle’s last seven league goals and the Magpies haven’t won a top-flight game without him. Bruce has Joelinton, Dwight Gayle and Andy Carroll to call upon, but the trio have only managed three Premier League goals between them in 2020/21, so they’re entering uncharted territories without their leading scorer to call upon.

Next up for Newcastle is a trip to face Chelsea on Monday and the Magpies could move up two places in the table with a win. Whether they can deliver without their most potent attacking threat remains to be seen, though.

Wilson has been a great acquisition for Newcastle, but now they risk being exposed following his injury as Bruce doesn’t have another prolific striker to take his place.
