Adam Armstrong interested in Newcastle return as Magpies stand to benefit from sell-on clause

Newcastle United are set to benefit financially from a 40% sell-on fee if Blackburn Rovers were to sell their prolific forward Adam Armstrong in the summer amid interest from West Ham, with the 23-year-old potentially interested in re-joining the Magpies, according to Chronicle Live.

Armstrong left Newcastle for Blackburn back in the summer of 2018 for around £1.75m and the forward has been an impressive performer at Ewood Park, maturing into one of the best strikers outside of the Premier League. So far this season, the 23-year-old has racked up an impressive tally of 17 goals and three assists in just 26 league appearances (Sofascore), making him the second top scorer in the division.

The forward had been a target for West Ham during the January transfer window and the Hammers reportedly considered making an offer of around £8m for him but ultimately opted against doing so. According to Chronicle Live, that offer would have been deemed too low by the Championship club, who were holding out for around £30m for him last summer.

The latest report from Chronicle Live suggests that Blackburn would have to lower that valuation in the summer as he is out of contract 2022. The Magpies are reportedly owed a 40% sell-on fee if he is sold elsewhere, which could even benefit them if they made a move to re-sign him, with the 23-year-old apparently interested in making the move back to St James’ Park, according to Chronicle Live.

Armstrong’s potential future will be really interesting to keep an eye on over the next few months, with the striker likely to attract a lot of attention in the summer especially if Blackburn do not reach the play-offs and earn promotion. Newcastle are in an advantageous position where they would benefit financially wherever he ends up after Ewood Park.

However, with Armstrong reportedly interested in coming back to the club, it would make a lot of sense for the Magpies to try and sign him as they would get him for a lower cost than any other prospective suitors. In a sense, this in-form goalscorer could be signed for a fraction of what it might cost to sign a similar player from another Championship club.

With the futures of both Andy Carroll and Dwight Gayle uncertain at the moment, Newcastle might have to spend in the summer to add to their strike force. Armstrong looks like one of the most attractive potential options out there at the moment.
