# Newcastle fans fume over transfer update on Jetro Willems

A number of Newcastle United supporters were furious at the club for not signing [Jetro Willems](https://readnewcastle.com/?p=29723) after [Chronicle Live reporter Mark Douglas](https://twitter.com/MsiDouglas/status/1356329513924190209) tweeted that the Dutchman wanted the move in January and had turned down other suitors to try and make it happen.

> A shame, this. Player wanted it, rejected other interest to focus on [#nufc](https://twitter.com/hashtag/nufc?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) too. Who knows what might happen in the summer. [https://t.co/KyB54igrBY](https://t.co/KyB54igrBY)

The defender established himself as a [firm fans’ favourite](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/newcastle-united-jetro-willems-return-19718480) during a loan spell with the Magpies last season; and in [his farewell message to supporters](https://twitter.com/JetroWillems_15/status/1277996817305780226?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1277996817305780226%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nufcblog.co.uk%2F2020%2F06%2F30%2Fjetro-willems-sends-emotional-message-to-newcastle-united-fans%2F), he maintained that the club would always have a special place in his heart. The 26-year-old’s loan at St James’ Park was cut short after [he suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51178969) during a win at home to Chelsea last January which ended his season.

The left-back has [yet to make a single appearance](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jetro-willems/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/146258) since returning to Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer and he had [reportedly been offered](https://www.shieldsgazette.com/sport/football/newcastle-united/newcastle-united-offered-chance-sign-jetro-willems-steve-bruces-january-transfer-progress-stalls-3100783) to the Magpies earlier in the window by the Bundesliga club. However, that report from the [Shields Gazette](https://www.shieldsgazette.com/sport/football/newcastle-united/newcastle-united-offered-chance-sign-jetro-willems-steve-bruces-january-transfer-progress-stalls-3100783) suggested that any deal would have to wait until the summer, with Newcastle concerned over his fitness.

[Douglas revealed on Twitter](https://twitter.com/MsiDouglas/status/1356329513924190209) that Willems was keen to return to the club this month and that [he had turned down offers](https://twitter.com/MsiDouglas/status/1356329513924190209) from other suitors in the hope of doing a deal with Newcastle. It will now be interesting to see what happens to him over the course of the next few months and into the summer.

### **Newcastle fans fume at failing to get Willems**

Many Newcastle fans were left annoyed that the club had not made the move to sign Willems during the January window, with some supporters believing that he would have been a very good addition to the squad, especially considering he was highly motivated to return.

> Hmmmm. I really like him but I think he needs to get fit and play games Mark. Even as a freebie he might not get the offers he desires in the summer if he’s not playing.

> Hopefully can get him signed up in the summer. Let Dummet go and have Jetro and Lewis for the left back position

> It is a shame. Why didn’t we do the deal. Ok he hasn’t played but sign him permanently build his fitness and his moral and he’s hit the ground running
