# Newcastle to make offer for Lukas Lerager ‘in next few days’

[Newcastle](https://readnewcastle.com/2021/01/29/steve-bruce-confirms-newcastle-loan-interest-hamza-choudhury/) are reportedly set to attempt to scupper FC Copenhagen’s efforts to sign Genoa midfielder [Lukas Lerager](https://readinternationalfootball.com/2018/06/07/denmarks-23-man-world-cup-squad-confirmed/), according to Danish outlet [BT](https://www.bt.dk/fodbold/bt-afsloerer-premier-league-klub-kan-oedelaegge-fck-transfer).

The Denmark international is attracting interest from his homeland, [along with Brentford](https://sportwitness.co.uk/midfielder-ended-sights-brentford-inserted-last-hours-signing/)and Serie A side Torino. Copenhagen have made an offer to loan Lerager for €4m (£3.5m) and Newcastle will be expected to match the offer at a minimum.

The Magpies are relatively late to the party on this one, but [BT](https://www.bt.dk/fodbold/bt-afsloerer-premier-league-klub-kan-oedelaegge-fck-transfer) claimed that they could be set to make an offer for the 27-year-old ‘in the next few days’.

Furthermore, the [10-cap Denmark international](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/lukas-lerager/nationalmannschaft/spieler/167105/verein_id/3436) is said to hold preference of a move away from a return to his homeland, and his ‘next favourite step’ in his career is a ‘move to Newcastle and the Premier League’.

This season, Lerager has played 19 times in all competitions, contributing [one goal and two assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/lukas-lerager/leistungsdaten/spieler/167105) so far in 2020/21.

### READ NEWCASTLE VERDICT

With little more than 50 hours left in the transfer window, those ‘next few days’ are going to be a stretch. As a senior Denmark international, there is clearly a player of repute in the [former Bordeaux man](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/lukas-lerager/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/167105).

However, given that [Steve Bruce](https://readnewcastle.com/2021/01/26/newcastle-fans-fume-over-plans-to-save-steve-bruce-job/)is well-stocked in the central midfield area, certainly [those of a defensive inclination](https://www.premierleague.com/clubs/23/Newcastle-United/squad), this link may struggle to get many Toon fans excited.

Options are always a welcome boost and signing Lerager would give Bruce an additional hand. However, if the Dane was [the only January arrival](https://www.skysports.com/newcastle-united-transfers), it would still represent an underwhelming transfer window for the Magpies.
