# Fans react to update on Dwight Gayle’s Magpies future

Many Newcastle United supporters have been reacting to a report from [The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/2323123/2021/01/15/transfer-news-man-utd-football-soccer/) that Steve Bruce has asked the Magpies to extend [Dwight Gayle’s](https://readnewcastle.com/2020/11/25/dwight-gayle-could-be-sold-in-january/) contract but that those at the top of the club are hesitant about doing so.

It has been [reported](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9114501/Fulham-keen-January-Newcastle-striker-Dwight-Gayle.html) that the Magpies were prepared to offer the striker a new contract but that his potential wage demands might prove to be a potential stumbling block. The 30-year-old’s current[£40,000-a-week contract](https://www.spotrac.com/epl/newcastle-united-fc/dwight-gayle-22936/) expires at the end of the season and he has been [unable to force his way into the side](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/dwight-gayle/leistungsdaten/spieler/196522), despite [scoring the winner against West Brom](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/55197155) shortly after his injury return last month.

There have been [reports](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9114501/Fulham-keen-January-Newcastle-striker-Dwight-Gayle.html) that Gayle is attracting the attention of Premier League rivals Fulham, who are hoping to tempt the Magpies into selling with an incentivised deal which would include add-ons should they retain their top-flight status. However, Newcastle are [reportedly](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9114501/Fulham-keen-January-Newcastle-striker-Dwight-Gayle.html) reluctant to let him leave the club for a potential relegation rival.

[Further reports](https://twitter.com/reluctantnicko/status/1348218743441264640) have suggested that he could be set to return to Crystal Palace at the end of his current deal with the Magpies in the summer. [The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/2323123/2021/01/15/transfer-news-man-utd-football-soccer/) have now reported that Bruce has asked the St James’ Park hierarchy to offer him fresh terms but there are doubts over his injury history, his age and his wage demands of more than £50,000 per week.

### **Newcastle fans react to Gayle saga**

The news was shared via [@NUFC360](https://twitter.com/NUFC360/status/1350841990875852810) on Twitter and many fans agree that Gayle should not be offered a new deal, although others hoped that a new contract could be sorted. Here we take a look at some of the best reactions from Magpies fans:

> Ridiculous situation. At a properly managed club he’d have been sold 2 years ago & money reinvested. Instead we refused to spend & held on too long resulting in asset with no residual value unless sold to likely relegation rival now. How much to replace? Usual Stupidity [#nufc](https://twitter.com/hashtag/nufc?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)
