# Newcastle ‘offered’ the chance to sign Jetro Willems

[Newcastle](https://readnewcastle.com/2021/01/15/newcastle-close-to-signing-faouzi-ghoulam-napoli/) have reportedly been ‘offered the chance’ to sign former loanee [Jetro Willems](https://readnewcastle.com/2020/12/14/newcastle-fans-react-report-january-transfer-plans/), according to the [Shields Gazette](https://www.shieldsgazette.com/sport/football/newcastle-united/newcastle-united-offered-chance-sign-jetro-willems-steve-bruces-january-transfer-progress-stalls-3100783).

The 26-year-old saw a promising spell at St James’ Park brought to an abrupt and cruel end a year ago when he [ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11678/11912246/jetro-willems-steve-bruce-fears-cruciate-ligament-injury-in-latest-newcastle-setback) against Chelsea.

Now, 12 months on after undergoing his recovery with parent club Eintracht Frankfurt, the [22-cap Netherlands international](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jetro-willems/nationalmannschaft/spieler/146258/verein_id/3379) has been offered back to the Magpies [after not playing](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jetro-willems/leistungsdaten/spieler/146258) in the Bundesliga this term.

However, the report claimed that any deal for the full-back is likely to wait until the summer when his [contract expires](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jetro-willems/profil/spieler/146258) as Newcastle remain wary of doing business this month.

Willems was impressive for the Toon and his injury came as a crushing blow a year ago. Prior to his season-ending setback, the Dutchman had earned an average rating of 6.94 in the Premier League with [Sofascore](https://www.sofascore.com/player/jetro-willems/138828).

Steve Bruce [signed Danny Rose on loan](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/done-deal-danny-rose-signs-17662265) until the end of the campaign from Tottenham to cover for Willems but he [failed to have the same impact](https://www.sofascore.com/player/danny-rose/16586).

### READ NEWCASTLE VERDICT

Left-back is a problem that hasn’t been resolved since Willems’ gut-wrenching injury.

Jamal Lewis was [signed in the summer](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12066514/jamal-lewis-newcastle-sign-left-back-from-norwich-for-15m-on-five-year-deal) with high hopes of hitting the ground running after [impressing for Norwich](https://www.sofascore.com/player/jamal-lewis/891803) last season, but it [hasn’t really worked](https://www.sofascore.com/player/jamal-lewis/891803) as of yet for the youngster.

Bruce may choose to persevere with Lewis for the remainder of the season, with the caveat of potentially bringing Willems back in the summer.
