A number of Newcastle United supporters were critical of Joelinton‘s performance in the Magpies’ 2-1 defeat to Leicester City at St James’ Park on Sunday.
Newcastle went into the game hoping to build on the encouraging performance they produced in their goalless draw against Liverpool last week. However, Steve Bruce’s side were not as solid at the back or as good in terms of pressing from the front as they had been against the Premier League champions. Despite Andy Carroll ending a lengthy goal drought, they still ultimately fell to defeat at home.
Joelinton struggled to have much of an impact on the game, with the 24-year-old not able to link the play well enough when Newcastle attempted to counter-attack during his 65 minutes on the pitch. The Brazilian gave the ball away 13 times and had just one effort on goal before he was eventually taken off (Sofascore).
Indeed, he has struggled to justify the £40m price tag for which he arrived in 2019, with a paltry seven goals in 64 appearances for the Magpies.
Newcastle fans react to Joelinton’s performance
Many Newcastle fans were quick to bemoan the 24-year-old’s “woeful” performance against the Foxes and some were questioning how the Brazilian still manages to be a guaranteed starter given the lack of end product he brings to the team.
He's a waste of a shirt. Not sure how many times he actually held the ball up and started a passage of play. It comes off for him occasionally but too little for someone playing in the front line.

Miggy now there is a great player there but so many times makes the wrong decision. Need maxi back. Matty did well again. Ritchie gives his all but really isn’t a left back. Fernandez Schar and Clarke did well for me. Joelinton was awful. #nufc

I always want Joelinton to play well and do something positive but he rarely seems up to it. I think I'd be happier to see Atsu start ahead of him if we continue playing in this manner. #nufc

People can keep making excuses for Joelinton, he just isn't very good 🤷♂️ #NUFC

Almiron off isn't a bad thing. He's not had any decent link up play with Wilson but Joelinton has been woeful also.
Could do with Gayle up top at some stage. #NUFC
