The 29-year-old started alongside Ciaran Clarke and Federico Fernandez at centre-back and helped limit the defending champions to four shots on target over 90 minutes. Schar blocked a number of shots, made multiple clearances, read the game well to intercept passes and wasn’t reckless making challenges. He was strong in the air and made an incredible clearance from the six-yard box to stop a goal, which led to supporters lauding him on social media. > Just watched last night's game again > > Darlow class\ > Schar solid at the back\ > Matty ran midfield\ > Wilson always looking to attack > > Best we've played for a long time[#nufc](https://twitter.com/hashtag/nufc?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) > > — ⚫⚪Craig Lee ⚫⚪ (@craigNUFClee) [December 31, 2020](https://twitter.com/craigNUFClee/status/1344592788562866178?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) https://twitter.com/G3ORDI3CAL/status/1344586122467438592?s=20 > Wilson, Darlow and Schar all outstanding for [#nufc](https://twitter.com/hashtag/nufc?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) imho. Wilson such a willing outlet, gave Phillips in particular a tough night. He tired but a threat for 80 mins. Darlow's saves and Schar clearances important. No lack of commitment from Bruce's players. 0-0 fair result [#NEWLIV](https://twitter.com/hashtag/NEWLIV?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) > > — Henry Winter (@henrywinter) [December 30, 2020](https://twitter.com/henrywinter/status/1344405069584867328?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) > Fabian Schar has often looked half hearted, erratic & disinterested in 2020, but he was back to his best last night. > > Aggressive, read the play brilliantly, calm on the ball & put his body on the line to protect our point. > > Great to see! ???[#NUFC](https://twitter.com/hashtag/NUFC?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) > > [pic.twitter.com/O8BNCvmDY7](https://t.co/O8BNCvmDY7) > > — NUFCblog.co.uk (@NUFCblogcouk) [December 31, 2020](https://twitter.com/NUFCblogcouk/status/1344598787608760320?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) > Saying that, our back 5, especially Schar/Fernandez/Clark were excellent. If not an absolute top team, he deserves to be playing in a quality team. Apart from clearances, his passing especially long passes are brilliant too. Schar has made [10 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fabian-schar/leistungsdaten/spieler/135343) in all competitions this season, keeping only his second clean sheet of the campaign. He hasn’t been on the winning side in any game since November but put in a performance that will steer Newcastle to victories in the future. The Magpies are 14th in the Premier League with 19 points from 15 games and will take a lot of positives from Wednesday’s stalemate. United next face Leicester City on January 3.
