A number of Newcastle United fans have suggested that the Magpies should avoid making a move for Aston Villa defender Ahmed Elmohamady in January, following Darren Bent’s claim that Steve Bruce would be interested.
Elmohamady has linked up with Bruce throughout his career in English football, initially with Sunderland before the current Newcastle manager signed him for Hull City. The pair were then reunited when the Magpies boss took over at Aston Villa in 2016.
It has already been reported that right-back is one of the areas which Newcastle are set to prioritise in January. With the Magpies set to operate on a small budget, it would be no surprise to see them make a move for someone in the mould of Elmohamady.
The experienced wide man has only made five Premier League appearances for Aston Villa so far this season, which suggests that he could be open to making a move away from Villa Park. He is also entering the last few months of his current deal.
Speaking to Football Insider, Bent has tipped him to reunite with Bruce yet again in January, saying: “Knowing him, he’ll probably end up at Newcastle because he seems to follow Steve Bruce absolutely everywhere, so it would not surprise me if he joins Newcastle.”
Newcastle fans react to Bent’s suggestion of Elmohamady move
Many Newcastle supporters have urged the Magpies not to make a move for the experienced defender, while one suggested that whilst they do not need him, it would be typical of their transfer policy for them to bring him to St James’ Park.
We don’t want him nor need him so it probably will happen
