Newcastle set to keep Jacob Murphy amid Rangers interest

Newcastle United are likely to keep hold of Jacob Murphy in the January transfer window, with the Magpies keen to ensure they have enough squad depth amid the continuation of Rangers’ long-term interest.

Murphy was the subject of plentiful transfer speculation over the summer, with Rangers having been reportedly interested in making a move for the versatile 25-year-old. Steve Bruce has relied on the player’s versatility so far this season, playing him in a wing-back role and at full-back as well as in his more natural position on the wing in the Premier League.

Murphy has made seven appearances in the Premier League for the Magpies this term, scoring one goal and providing one assist, but he has only made five starts for Newcastle and has often been left on the bench by Bruce (Transfermarkt).

It has been reported that he would like to be getting more regular game time than what he has had so far this term, according to Chronicle Live.

Rangers are reportedly set to continue their chase of the 25-year-old in January, with Newcastle and Murphy still mulling over a potential new contract which would see him commit his future to the club, per Chronicle Live. It is expected that Bruce will decide to keep hold of him in the winter window to prevent his squad losing some vital depth.

Murphy has proven his versatility, which makes him an invaluable option for Bruce to have in his squad at the moment given the congested nature of the fixture list. The Magpies boss has already revealed that he is unlikely to be busy in the transfer market, so he can ill afford to lose too many of his squad players.

The 25-year-old has shown a strong resolve to come back and fight for his place in the squad again after he was loaned out to Sheffield Wednesday last season. He has highlighted the qualities he can bring to the team when selected, averaging 0.9 shots, 0.7 key passes, 1.3 tackles and 2.3 successful dribbles per game (Sofascore). Those are impressive numbers for a player who is often on the fringes of the starting line-up.

It is therefore easy to see why Rangers have been so interested in Murphy and Newcastle could be wise to sort out a new deal for him ahead of the January transfer window. That would avoid any potential rumours circulating over his future and leave him fully concentrated on forcing his way into the team on a prolonged basis.
