A number of Newcastle United supporters have been hailing the latest reports that Jetro Willems has decided to reject the offer of a new contract by Eintracht Frankfurt which leaves the door open for the Magpies.
Willems enjoyed an excellent first half of the season out on loan at St James’ Park last season. with the 22-cap Netherlands international establishing himself as a firm favourite among many Newcastle supporters. The defender made 19 Premier League appearances for Steve Bruce’s side last term, with two goals and two assists to his name (Sofascore).
The left-back’s time at Newcastle was cut short due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury he suffered during a 1-0 win against Chelsea at the start of this year. That injury saw him return to Frankfurt prematurely and he has only just recently started to return to fitness, but with his contract entering the final six months, he is reportedly open to a potential cut-price departure.
It had been reported that the defender favoured a return to Newcastle, but there has also been interest from PSV Eindhoven in the Eredivisie ahead of the January window. Willems has now decided to reject a new deal with Frankfurt to seek a potential move away from the German outfit during the winter window, per Chronicle Live.
Newcastle fans react to update on Jetro Willems
Many Newcastle fans urged the Magpies to get a deal for the defender sorted out in January, with some supporters believing it would be a huge mistake not to try and sign him on a permanent deal. It will now be interesting to see whether they do look to bring him in full-time in the winter transfer window.
We have to bring him back now surely!!

Bring him home, he has great chemistry with ASM down the wing, and he can actually defend as well as attack.

He was terrific at NUFC. A loan signing that was a success. Would be delighted to see him back #NUFC

Sell Yedlin to make space for Willems. Be nice to have two natural left backs at the club for once. https://t.co/LrYTy3T3od

I’d take him back in a heartbeat, I think he has unfinished business and we haven’t got anything to lose by signing him anyways. https://t.co/kjuTu7EPR6
