# Newcastle set for firm stance over important player as clubs eye up move

Newcastle United are set to maintain a firm stance over the future of [Dwight Gayle](https://readnewcastle.com/2020/11/25/dwight-gayle-could-be-sold-in-january/) during the January transfer window, with the Magpies ready to block any potential departure, according to [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/newcastle-united-plan-to-block-gayle-exit-in-january/).

The 30-year-old has not made an appearance for Newcastle so far this season, with the forward having suffered a knee injury during pre-season which has forced him out for around four months, per [Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11678/12064475/dwight-gayle-facing-up-to-four-months-out-with-knee-injury). However, he is [closing in on a return to first team action](https://www.footballinsider247.com/newcastle-united-plan-to-block-gayle-exit-in-january/) over the next few weeks.

The Magpies’ centre-forward options were stretched over the last few weeks with Callum Wilson having missed out on their 2-0 defeat against Chelsea with a [hamstring injury](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/newcastle-callum-wilson-injury-palace-19349278). However, the 28-year-old returned to action in their win against Crystal Palace and formed an effective partnership with Joelinton at Selhurst Park, with both players[setting one another up for each other’s goals](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/spielbericht/index/spielbericht/3421766).

The Magpies are [bracing themselves](https://www.footballinsider247.com/newcastle-united-plan-to-block-gayle-exit-in-january/) for strong January interest in Gayle, who is being monitored by Premier League and top Championship clubs and is entering the final stages of his current [£40,000-a-week deal](https://www.spotrac.com/epl/newcastle-united-fc/dwight-gayle-22936/) at St James Park. Newcastle are ready to block any cut-price move for him and are still aiming to tie him down to a potential new deal, per [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/newcastle-united-plan-to-block-gayle-exit-in-january/).

### **Read Newcastle verdict**

Gayle is clearly viewed as a valuable and important member of Steve Bruce’s squad ahead of the second half of the season, with the Magpies having been [heavily reliant on Wilson for goals](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/newcastle-united/leistungsdaten/verein/762) in the early weeks of the campaign. He had just been starting to establish himself as a more prominent figure in the starting line-up before his injury.

With Gayle entering the latter stages of his current deal, it is no surprise that other clubs are circling ahead of the winter window. Indeed, he would be a very useful addition to a number of Championship sides battling for promotion as well as some Premier League clubs hoping to avoid dropping out of the top flight.

However, with [finances set to be tight](https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/18896603.newcastle-boss-steve-bruce-will-limited-loan-signings-january/) for the Magpies, they would probably be unlikely to find a quality replacement for him were he to leave. Therefore, they should do all they can to ensure they are not left without sufficient cover for Wilson and keep hold of Gayle even if it risks losing a player they had [not long ago valued at £20m](https://www.footballinsider247.com/newcastle-united-plan-to-block-gayle-exit-in-january/) for free next summer.
