A number of Newcastle fans have been reacting to the Magpies being drawn to face FA Cup holders Arsenal in the third round of the competition.
The Magpies will be aiming to repeat the rare success they have enjoyed in the Carabao Cup this season, with Steve Bruce’s side into the quarter-finals of the tournament, where they will face Brentford for a place in the last four. That tie is set to take place during the hectic festive schedule later this month.
Newcastle managed to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup last term having eventually got past League One outfit Rochdale via a replay in the third round. Further wins were secured against Oxford United and West Brom before they were eventually outclassed at St James’ Park by Manchester City as they missed out on a place in the last four.
Arsenal fared better in what has traditionally been a reliable source for silverware for them, beating Chelsea in the final to secure the FA Cup for the 14th time in their history – a record for the competition.
Newcastle fans react to Arsenal draw
Many Newcastle fans were quick to suggest that the “awful” draw against the Gunners places even more importance on their Carabao Cup tie with Brentford, with them believing it is now their only realistic chance of lifting silverware. Some fans even suggested that, given their recent luck in cup draws, it was inevitable they would get a tricky tie this time around.
Our luck was bound to run out with the cup draws eventually, awful record against arsenal #NUFC

Brentford game in the League Cup becomes even more important now. Arsenal not exactly brilliant at the moment, but still a tough tie. https://t.co/9aruAbRe6h
