# Newcastle fans react to reports of planned new deal for Jacob Murphy

A number of Newcastle United fans have been reacting to [reports](https://www.footballinsider247.com/pl-club-make-move-to-block-rangers-pre-agreement-jan-deal-with-25-yr-old-ibrox-exclusive/) that the Magpies are set to offer a new deal to [Jacob Murphy](https://readnewcastle.com/2020/10/27/opinion-jacob-murphy-must-build-on-late-glory-with-consistent-performances/) to prevent him leaving on a free transfer.

Murphy’s Newcastle career had appeared in doubt after he had spent the time on loan with Sheffield Wednesday in the summer, but Steve Bruce [confirmed](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/newcastle-jacob-murphy-steve-bruce-18985825) that it was never his intention to send the 25-year-old out on loan again this term after he had impressed the manager in pre-season.

The [versatile](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jacob-murphy/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/199527) former Norwich City man has played a key role for the Magpies over the last few weeks, showing his ability to operate in a wing-back role and scoring his [second goal of the season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jacob-murphy/leistungsdaten/spieler/199527) with a well-taken free-kick against Wolves. That shows that Murphy still has plenty to offer at St James’ Park.

The 25-year-old’s current [£25,000-a-week](https://www.spotrac.com/epl/newcastle-united-fc/jacob-murphy-24253/) contract runs out at the end of the season, which means he could sign pre-contract agreements in January with the likes of Rangers who were [interested in him](https://www.footballinsider247.com/pl-club-make-move-to-block-rangers-pre-agreement-jan-deal-with-25-yr-old-ibrox-exclusive/) over the summer.  However, Newcastle are keen to tie him down to a new deal to avoid losing him for free after he cost them £10m to sign, per [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/pl-club-make-move-to-block-rangers-pre-agreement-jan-deal-with-25-yr-old-ibrox-exclusive/).

### **Newcastle fans react to Jacob Murphy contract update**

Many Newcastle fans were suggesting that giving Murphy a new contract shows a lack of ambition from the current regime in charge of the club, with many believing that the 25-year-old is a Championship-quality player who should probably be allowed to leave St James’ Park.

> This is the problem with Bruce, a championship manager happy with championship players unfortunately he’s in the premier league. Nothing against Murphy just don’t think he’s good enough

> Initial reaction was whyyyyyy? But actually makes sense to offer him a one or two year extension since his contract is up at the end of the season. Better not be 5 or 6 years!
