Newcastle fans urge Magpies to make cut-price move for Jetro Willems

Newcastle fans urge Magpies to make cut-price move for Jetro Willems

A number of Newcastle United supporters have urged the Magpies to make a move to re-sign former Magpies loanee Jetro Willems on a permanent deal in January.

The 26-year-old spent last season on loan at Newcastle from Eintracht Frankfurt and he was an impressive performer for the Magpies in full-back and wing-back roles during the first half of the campaign. The 22-cap Netherlands international demonstrated his ability at both ends of the field, making 1.9 tackles and two clearances per game, as well as 0.8 key passes (Sofascore).

However, the Dutchman suffered a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament in January which saw him leave the club prematurely, with Steve Bruce bringing in Danny Rose from Tottenham Hotspur. In the summer the Magpies opted against making a fresh move for him after being deterred by Frankfurt’s valuation, per Chronicle Live. Instead, Jamal Lewis was brought in from Norwich City.

It has now emerged that Newcastle is his first choice for finding a new club in January, with an exit from Frankfurt looking likely. The Magpies have the potential to negotiate a cut-price deal for the 26-year-old but are facing competition from his other previous club PSV Eindhoven, per Chronicle Live.

Many Newcastle fans were keen to point out that, for a reduced fee, it would make perfect sense for the Magpies to sign Willems. Some were keen to mention how beneficial a signing it could be in terms of helping Lewis’ development over the next few years.
