Newcastle United centre-back Fabian Schar was at the heart of his country’s 3-3 draw with Germany on Tuesday night, albeit for all the wrong reasons.
Starting for Switzerland against the star-studded German’s, Schar was involved in all three goals conceded by his nation before being sent off in the dying minutes for a second bookable offence.
Despite Schar’s shortcomings on the night, Switzerland earned a credible 3-3 draw from the UEFA Nations League clash in Cologne.
Schar, who was in need of match fitness before the international break having appeared just once in the Premier League this term for the Magpies, made three starts over the past week against Croatia, Spain, and Germany.
Those appearances against top-quality opposition should stand the experienced 28-year-old in good stead having missed pre-season and several months with a shoulder injury.

Clearly not one of Schar’s better outings, albeit against a wonderful German side. However, the Swiss defender was certainly in need of minutes under his belt before the Newcastle fixture list heats up starting with the visit of Manchester United on Saturday night.
Schar’s only league outing for the Magpies this term came in the 3-1 victory over Burnley before the international break at St James’ Park.
Now back to full fitness, the 28-year-old will be looking to oust Federico Fernandez to partner Jamal Lascelles at the heart of the defence.
