Newcastle are closing in on a deal for rising Peruvian star Rodrigo Vilca from Municipal Deportivo, as per a report from Telemundo Sports’ Diego Montalvan.

The Magpies are believed to have held talks over a possible £250,000 deal for the 21-year-old attacking midfielder, and the player’s brother is also optimistic about the chances of a deal happening.

Fabian Vilca told Sports reporter Diego Montalvan:

We feel very happy, we’re very happy with what’s going on with my brother, personally and professionally. We hope that everything is done soon.

The links with a Peruvian star will bring back memories of Newcastle legend Nolberto Solano. Born in Lima, like Vilca, Solano represented the Magpies on over 300 occasions across two spells and a decade at St James’ Park.

Whilst far too premature to draw comparisons, should Vilca have half the success of his countryman, he would become a very popular figure with the Newcastle fans.

Vilca has played 15 times for his club’s senior team in the Peruvian top-flight, scoring three times and making three assists.

Relatively unknown and certainly unproven at anything like Premier League level, a South American import is always one to excite the faithful, and clubs simply never know what talent could be unearthed.
