Celtic show interest in Newcastle’s Freddie Woodman

Scottish champions Celtic are interested in signing Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie Woodman this summer, according to a report in The Chronicle.

Celtic were keen to keep Fraser Forster at the club on a permanent basis, but the goalkeeper backed out of a deal at the last minute, meaning Neil Lennon has been left to explore other options.

One of those options is seemingly Woodman, who is currently on loan at Championship side Swansea City, where he’s kept 12 clean sheets.

Newcastle are apparently ready to loan the 23-year-old out again next season in order to allow him to continue to develop.

If Swansea can somehow secure promotion to the Premier League this season, then Newcastle should consider letting Woodman stay there for another year to get a full year of top-flight football.

If they don’t go up, however, a move to Celtic could appeal to the goalkeeper and in terms of his development, playing in European competition for The Hoops could also be good for him.

In truth, given that goalkeepers can play well into their late 30s, there’s a chance that Martin Dúbravka stays in goal for Newcastle for a number of years which could mean Woodman ends up moving on permanently in the future.
