# Newcastle fans slam claim that Rondon and Joelinton could work well together

Several Newcastle fans have reacted strongly to a tweet from [Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie](https://twitter.com/SkySports_Keith/status/1230517094137180165?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1230517094137180165&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fthisisfutbol.com%2F2020%2F02%2Fblogs%2Fpremier-league%2Fnewcastle-fans-respond-to-keith-downies-tweet%2F), who suggested that Joelinton and Salomon Rondon would have made a good partnership for the Magpies.

[Downie’s tweet was in response](https://twitter.com/SkySports_Keith/status/1230517094137180165?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1230517094137180165&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fthisisfutbol.com%2F2020%2F02%2Fblogs%2Fpremier-league%2Fnewcastle-fans-respond-to-keith-downies-tweet%2F)to Chronicle Live’s Mark Douglas, who had been praising an [exclusive interview with Rondon by The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/1619457/?source=twitteruk) reporter George Caulkin.

[In the interview](https://theathletic.com/1619457/?source=twitteruk), Venezuela international Rondon, who [scored 11 goals in 32](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/salomon-rondon/leistungsdaten/spieler/80197/plus/0?saison=2018) Premier League games for the Magpies while on loan from West Brom last season, revealed that he would have loved to have re-signed with Newcastle, saying:

> It’s about decisions and it wasn’t my decision.
>
> If Newcastle had offered me a deal, if they’d said ‘Do you want to stay here?’, then of course I would have stayed.

Instead of signing Rondon permanently, the Magpies chose to sign Joelinton from Hoffenheim to be their main striker this season.

However, [the £40million Brazilian](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/jul/23/newcastle-united-sign-joelinton-club-record-hoffenheim-brazil) has not looked suited to the position, [scoring just once in 26](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joelinton/leistungsdaten/spieler/333241) league games.

Following [Downie’s tweet](https://twitter.com/SkySports_Keith/status/1230517094137180165?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1230517094137180165&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fthisisfutbol.com%2F2020%2F02%2Fblogs%2Fpremier-league%2Fnewcastle-fans-respond-to-keith-downies-tweet%2F), that claimed a potential Rondon and Joelinton parternship could be “a real problem for any defence”, a number of Newcastle fans took to Twitter to disagree with the journalist.
