Newcastle manager Steve Bruce has admitted that he wants Karl Darlow to stay at the club beyond the end of the season.
Darlow, who is Newcastle’s second-choice goalkeeper, is out of contract at the end of the season. However, Bruce wants him to remain at St. James’ Park and provide competition for Martin Dubravka.
Speaking to The Chronicle, Bruce said this when asked about Darlow’s situation:
I’d like Karl to stay too.
It is vitally important that we have that competition.
If and when he gets his chance Karl will be fine.

Darlow is a capable back-up for Newcastle and has proven his worth at times in the past for the club. The English shot-stopper appears content to stay and compete with Dubravka, which is an admirable trait as he has refused to play up at not being a regular in the team.
If he is, indeed, happy to stay and play second fiddle, it would make sense for Newcastle to hand him a new deal. There is no point in letting Darlow go on a free and going out to sign a new goalkeeper when Martin Dubravka is the undisputed number one on Tyneside anyway. Penning Darlow down to a new deal appears to be the best course of action at this moment in time.
