Newcastle are hopeful of securing a new contract for academy graduate Matty Longstaff in the coming weeks.
According to The Chronicle, Newcastle are confident that they will be able to tie Longstaff down to a long-term deal.
The report claims that his current contract expires at the end of the season, with a compensation fee of £400k touted if he were to leave the club.

Would this be a great move by the club?

Yes. Longstaff was superb on his debut against Manchester United before the international break, scoring the winning goal in the game. However, he was also excellent aside from his brilliant strike as he battled hard in midfield and won a number of tackles to break up the play.
At just 19, Longstaff could have a very bright future ahead of him and it is wise for Newcastle to tie him down and secure his services for years to come. With his brother Sean also in the team, Steve Bruce could have his midfield pairing sorted for the next five-to-six years – if they all stay at the club during that time, of course.
Newcastle now just need to make sure they can get this deal over the line and avoid any clubs speaking with him in the January window. If he gets to the next transfer window and only has six months left on his deal he will be free to speak to clubs outside of England.
