Ritchie is a key player for Newcastle so they will be hoping that he is back in action as quickly as possible this season.
The club revealed that it was only a minor operatation, which suggests that his absense will not be extended into the long-term. This is a huge boost for Newcastle, given his experience and quality in midfield and in defence.
He is a leader on the pitch and his return to action could allow him to return to midfield, with Jetro Willems currently impressing at left wing-back. Ritchie could replace Miguel Almiron in the side, who is struggling to make an impact in the Premier League.
