# Newcastle keeping tabs on Matheson – should they sign him?

Newcastle are keeping tabs on Rochdale defender Luke Matheson as they weigh up a January swoop for the youngster.

[According to The Chronicle,](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/newcastle-scouted-rochdale-luke-matheson-16988895) Newcastle have been watching Matheson for several months and hold an interest in him.

Matheson played in Rochdale’s defeat to Manchester United on Wednesday night and scored the goal which sent the game to spot-kicks.

Should Newcastle sign him in January?

After his impressive performances at Rochdale so far this season, it would appear as though he is a great prospect for the future. At 16, he is one to watch and could be a shrewd investment by Newcastle if they were to bring him to the club in January.

They could sign him and send him back on loan to Rochdale for the rest of the season in order for him to gain regular first-team minutes and continue his development, preparing him for a future in the first-team at Newcastle.

With the likes of Emil Kraft and Javier Manquillo failing to catch the eye at right-back, Matheson could be the answer Steve Bruce is looking for – in the long-term, of course.
