Sunderland beat Sheffield United 1-0 in the League Cup on Wednesday night to progress through to the next round.
This means that Sunderland have now beaten two Premier League sides this season, after overcoming Burnley in the last round, which is one more than Newcastle have managed.

Whilst Sunderland fans could use this to taunt Newcastle fans, it has to be said that they are facing up against Premier League sides with weakened teams – rather than the full strength outfits Newcastle have to face on a week-to-week basis.
This is not to detract from Sunderland’s achievement, as they have clearly been impressive so far, but Newcastle had to face a good Leicester side and have already played Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool in the league.
